Feb. 5: Rally to support brutality victim Jeremiah Mearday

Three years after two white cops brutally beat Jeremiah Mearday, the police and State's Attorney Dick Devine are still pushing to criminalize the victim. Don't let the system railroad another young black man.

Rally to Support Jeremiah Mearday
9:00 AM, Monday, February 5
Gather on the steps of the Cook County Criminal Courthouse, 26th & California

Jeremiah Mearday's case is a glaring example of systemic police misconduct. On March 19, 1998 -- one week after the City fired white police officers James Comito and Matthew Thiel for assaulting Jerry in 1997 -- Jerry was arrested for felony drug possession. Police claim they just happened to pick him up, had no idea who he was, and after 'repeated' searches finally 'found' crack cocaine in his shoe. Civilian eyewitnesses flatly disagree with the police version of events, yet State's Attorney Dick Devine has decided to press felony charges and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley has supported these actions.

Jerry's bogus indictment is one of hundreds of cases where cops and prosecutors collude to bring false charges against the victims of police violence instead of the perpetrators -- violent cops. Brutality, misconduct, fabrication of evidence, false charges, torture -- Chicago police will stop at nothing to preserve their 'right' to act with impunity on the streets. Both Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have cited Chicago's police department for its abuses. And the abuse doesn't end with the police. Prosecutors, judges and elected officials are complicit in this travesty of justice.

Send police superintendent Terry Hillard, Dick Devine and Mayor Richard Daley a message. Tell them you're tired of the lies, tired of the frame-ups and tired of the systemic abuse of human rights in this city. Support Jerry on February 5 -- and let all our youth know we will not abandon them when the system wrongly turns on them.
