Vinson & Elkins finds itself on the defensive

May 22 — Early in the morning last Oct. 23, Ronald Astin, a partner at the Houston law firm Vinson & Elkins, joined Enron Corp. executives in a meeting room next to Chairman Kenneth Lay’s office. A conference call with analysts was about to begin, and the group needed to script an explanation for Enron’s unfolding troubles, which included mysterious partnerships that appeared to be keeping big chunks of debt hidden away.
