Ending Capital Punishment in 2002 is the topic of discussion at the next meeting of the Chicago Branch of the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, Saturday, May 18, 2002, 2PM, at the Harris YWCA, 6200 S. Drexel Ave.

Jane Bohman, Executive Director of the Illinois Coalition Against the Death Penalty, will bring us up to date on plans and progress towards passage of House Bill 576, which calls for the abolition of the death penalty in Illinois. Delbert Tibbs also will be with us to share insights from his personal experience on Death Row. Mr. Tibbs was freed after a long campaign in which the NAARPR played a leading role.

The long-awaited report of Governor George Ryan’s Commission on Capital Punishment, while not recommending abolishment, does add momentum nationwide to end the death penalty. But there is much work to be done to bring it about. Please join us on Saturday, May 18 th as we plan for the campaign ahead.
