SLAP Internship Announcement

Student Labor Action Project (SLAP) Internship position open immediately
Jobs with Justice (JwJ) is a permanent coalition of over 65 labor unions, community and faith-based organizations, and student groups working together to build power through strategic collective action and labor-community solidarity to advance the rights of working people. We educate working people about the connection between workers' rights and strong communities. Chicago JwJ explores innovative community based organizing for economic justice and is part of a national network.

SLAP is a student-based network of labor activists from various hugh school, public, private and community colleges and universities working to support labor struggles on campus and throughout Chicago. This project is housed within JwJ to ensure support for this type of student activism from labor unions, community organizations, and faith based groups. Therefore, JwJ is hiring a SLAP intern to help further develop this project and build the links between students and local labor campaigns.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organizing monthly SLAP meetings, recruiting new students and student organizations to be members of SLAP, assisting the committees of SLAP (Labor Solidarity, Sweatshop, and Prison Action Committees) to develop and implement campaigns, coordinating a Grassroots Organizing Weekend (GROW) training in Chicago, coordinating the April 4 National SLAP Day of Action, and working with the other JwJ staff members and the Executive Committee to build community campaigns for union organizing drives, contract campaigns, and strikes.

SKILLS AND QUALITIES:
- Minimum one year active student organizing experience
- Excellent communication skills, oral and written, including public speaking
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with diverse organizations and people
- Ability to conceptualize and implement a creative campaign
- Willingness to work flexible hours
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team

COMPENSATION:
$3000 stipend - for 3 months. We are willing to explore different options for the length of the internship, and we are also willing to have this internship be used toward class credit.
