Reverend Billy wants you to stop shopping! REVEREND BILLY REVEREND BILLY

In chicagi this weekend: REVEREND BILLY OF THE CHURCH OF STOP SHOPPING TO PREACH THE ANTI-CORPORATE
GOSPEL!

REVEREND BILLY OF THE CHURCH OF STOP SHOPPING TO PREACH THE ANTI-CORPORATE
GOSPEL!

Reverend Billy, a New York-based activist and performer, will discuss current
projects and deliver a sermon on Saturday, April 27, 2002 at the A-Zone, 2129 N.
Milwaukee. The Reverend, a.k.a. Bill Talen, has created active spectacles and
sermons in places like Starbucks and The Disney Store with the purpose of
enlightening shoppers and passers-by to the oppressive policies of these
corporate strongholds. Members of the Church of Stop Shopping often accompany
the Reverend, and shout “Hallelujah!” as he roams, preaching the word of
independently-run endeavors and social justice. He is currently starring in a
one-man, Off-Broadway show, and continues to fight oppression from his pulpit of
the streets (and corporate coffeeshops).

The New York Times’ Jonathan Kalb said “…anyone who has not seen him has been
missing some of the most courageous, hilarious and pointed theater in New York.”
Alisa Solomon wrote in the Village Voice, “The Reverend Billy has become the Al
Sharpton of the ultraironic yet politically committed…” . The management of
Starbucks has also weighed in on the good Reverend’s loquacious stylings: see a
memo from them at

During his Chicago visit, Reverend Billy will also speak at the Critical
Practice and Collective Action Symposium at the Smart Museum of Art on the
University of Chicago campus in Hyde Park. The symposium is taking place in
conjunction with Critical Mass, an exhibition at the Smart presenting the work
of local artists and art groups whose practice is often described as
community-based, critical, or political. Critical Mass opens on Thursday, April
25, 2002, and the Critical Practice Symposium follows on Friday, April 26 and
Saturday, April 27. For more information on the symposium, call the museum at
