Workers enjoy a picnic among shoppers using food taken from the aisles a giant super market in Bagnolet, near Paris, during a protest action October 25, 2008. Several dozen people from a French group, \L'Appel et la Pioche\" (a play on words - Shovel and Pick) entered a supermarket, selected food items without paying, and ate a picnic amongst shoppers to protest global capitalism, rampant consumerism, bank bail-outs, poor housing, expensive food, profit margins and pretty much everything else that is wrong in the world. Hearing Officer Respiro Vazquez February 12, 2009 - 7:36 PM
Jonian Jones Cheney, Biology teacher at CACS; She talked about the importance of quality elementary schools like South Chicago, “It’s difficult to teach high schoolers when they’ve lost the first eight years of instruction.” February 12, 2009 - 7:36 PM
James Dispenza, director of School Demographics and Planning; claimed South Chicago is underutilized; students will go to nearest neighborhood schools, 14 students in city-wide autism cluster, students with IEPs and students in the homeless program would be guided to the “most appropriate transfer programs.” Despite pointing to forty Pre-Kindergarten students, Dispenza declared that the enrollment trend id ‘down”. February 12, 2009 - 7:36 PM
Susan Vega, community member; graduated from the school when it was the “old” Sullivan School. She suggested looking at the Spry School model, which extends their students into high school. February 12, 2009 - 7:36 PM
Sylvia Ortega, spoke against myth that small schools can’t afford programs. She mentioned the CATCH program, Healthy Kids and a planned Computer Resource Center for the community. “Underenrollment has been the key to our success,” she stated. February 12, 2009 - 7:36 PM
Kelly Parker; parent of a Pre-K child. She has concerns for safety if she has to send her child a mile away to Sullivan; the area has a lot of gang problems and the school is a safe haven. February 12, 2009 - 7:36 PM
George W. Smith Jr., community member; “If it takes a village to raise a child, why is CPS destroying the village?” Mr. Smith also mentioned Nuclear Physicist Robert Oppenheimer’s reference to the Baghvad Gita upon first atomic explosion, “I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” He said that CPS is consumed in their power, and is destroying worlds everytime they close a school. February 12, 2009 - 7:36 PM
Mrs. Walker, parent; Talked about her son who is a student with special needs. He has done very well at South Chicago because of adequate attention. She points out that the other neighboring schools are overcrowded. February 12, 2009 - 7:36 PM
Marcus Ayala, principal; Mr. Ayala said that if underenrollment was truly a problem, the district could redraw the school’s boundary lines to include more students from the overcrowded schools. Also pointed out that closing South Chicago goes against the board’s claims of creating more “school choice.” February 12, 2009 - 7:36 PM
Genoveva Mejia, teacher; “It’s a sad day in Chicago when good schools are closed down. CPS has stopped thinking about children and more about money.” February 12, 2009 - 7:46 PM
Carol Caref, teacher and CORE member; “The children are being talked about like they’re chess pieces, and you can just move them around wherever they want.” “The board has a business perspective, it’s (either) maximum numbers or close it down.” Carol talked about Caucus of Rank and File Educators support for South Chicago’s struggle. February 12, 2009 - 7:46 PM
Texters, James Dispenza; Mr. James Dispenza (on left) spent the duration of the hearings ignoring the human reality behind his numbers. February 12, 2009 - 7:46 PM
Kirk Mangem, parent; “Really, enough is enough.” Mr. Mangem talked about how the school is a safe haven and closing the school will uproot the children, causing them to start over in making new relationships. “I can’t put my ten year old kid on a bus.” February 12, 2009 - 7:46 PM
Jessica Jazzell, parent of two children; Jazzell’s son went to one of the overcrowded schools nearby, “there were forty students in the room and he never came home with homework.” Both her son and daughter are at South Chicago now and are doing really well. She added that, “losing South Chicago will only create more statistics of kids dropping out.” February 12, 2009 - 7:46 PM
Sacheem Thomas parent, (curly hair); Mrs. Thomas said that her son has already been shuffled between 3-4 schools already. “He is at home here.” February 12, 2009 - 7:54 PM
Paula Bullard parent (red sweatshirt); Bullard has two boys in the seventh and eighth grades. She said that their grades have come up tremendously since coming to South Chicago. “This is the best place for them to go.” February 12, 2009 - 7:54 PM
Elizabeth Quintana, teacher, fifth grade; Quintana has taught at South Chicago when it used to be the “old” Sullivan. The average class size is now 20-22 students, but it used to be 35 when it was Sullivan. “It is breaking my heart that our schooll might close.” February 12, 2009 - 7:54 PM
Tina Kelly , teacher; Mrs. Kelly has been the Math and Science teacher for the upper grades since South Chicago opened in 2002. She used to teach in the suburbs, five classes a day of 30 students. Kelly talked about how she knows the kids, and they know her. They know that they will have her, and they know about her high expectations of academic rigor. “It is absurd to close the school because of class size.” She also mentioned that more students have been coming because the school is so good. February 12, 2009 - 7:54 PM
Bob Reegan, building engineer; Mr. Reegan has been the building engineer for the last fifteen years. He said, “Ask Mayor Daley if he remembers the old community schools?” He said that South Chicago is this community’s school. February 12, 2009 - 7:54 PM
Marrello Wilson, student; Marrello’s mother Faia read the letter that he wrote, “Obama said ‘We can change the world, but first we must change ourselves.’ Please don’t close my school, give me a chance to change the world.” February 12, 2009 - 7:54 PM
Arianna Brown, 7th grader; Arianna read from her essay. She said that coming to South Chicago was like “getting a new toy. You play with it, you get to know it. But I feel like a bully is snatching my new toy.” She said she has made great friends, which is hard because she is shy. “My teachers seem to really care, everyone knows our names. I hope the bully doesn’t take my school.” February 12, 2009 - 7:54 PM
Sandy Jackson, 7th Ward Ald.; Mrs. Jackson was given ten minutes by the hearing officer to talk to her constituents. She fired them up with her support. “I want to let you know how strongly I feel about this school...importance of teachers who care, AND who are properly equippe...we need a cessation of school closing...I don’t believe (CPS) resources are spent fairly and wisely... (referencing new CEO Ron Huberman) I went to law school, but I am not educated to be the leader of a school system...there should have been a nationwide search...something is wrong here... (we) need an impartial body to review this process from top to bottom... our children need one on one attention, and they deserve it!” She added that, “the system is rigged against parents and teachers who want to make a difference...(powers that be) will not act until there are a ton of people in their faces.” Jackson agreed to support school community members going to the February board meeting with busses. February 12, 2009 - 7:54 PM
Shaquila Richardson, parent of third grader and Kindergartener February 12, 2009 - 7:54 PM
Rosita Chatova, teacher (black coat); Ms. Chatova came from Williams School, which was the first school to be closed under Renaissance 2010. “I bought a house in the community to be close to the children, I like to see them when I go out to the store.” She also stated that, “In a small setting you can achieve teh goals that you set.” Chatova also asked that of the 65 public schools that have closed, why on the south and southwest sides only?” February 12, 2009 - 8:03 PM

Woman who was to speak next, realizing that she would not be allowed. February 12, 2009 - 8:03 PM
Luis Rodriguez, atty. for CPS who declared the “rules” don’t allow for more speakers, as the time to sign up was over. The time was 6:30 and parents who had just left work were still arriving, expecting to speak before the advertised 7:00pm finish time. February 12, 2009 - 8:03 PM
Principal Marcus Ayala, took the mic to demand parents be allowed to speak. Luis Rodriguez buttons up his expensive suit in the background after slamming the door on the parents of South Chicago. February 12, 2009 - 8:03 PM
Security closed down the mic and moved aggressively to make a barricade in front of the table. A representative from CPS Office of Communications approached me in the midst of this action to demand “who are you with?” I asserted that I was busy and he could ask me later. It is worthy to note that the only three people to document this hearing aside from the court stenographer was myself, Dave Vance of Labor Beat, and Carol Caref who took notes on her laptop. The corporate and community press have been ubiquitously absent from the public hearings. Did CPS Communications view me as breaking a news blackout? February 12, 2009 - 8:03 PM

Children from Peabody have a good time together keeping warm during the vigil and press conference. They did not participate in the overnight camping. February 27, 2009 - 8:53 PM
“Save Our Children. Save Our Schools.” Seven tents were set up for the night, with about twelve activists spending the night. This campout was done symbolically several years ago when Chicago Public Schools was implementing the Mid South Plan of school closings. Community members would arrive at the board meeting to find that the sign-in table had opened early. In front of them were large numbers of people from charter schools who’d apparently been alerted to arrive as early as 6:00 am. This dishonest deterrant by CPS kept many of the opponents of the Mid South Plan from speaking. At the following board meeting, they camped out in order to be first. For this board meeting, the table did not open until 8:00 am. The month prior it opened about a half hour earlier. February 27, 2009 - 8:53 PM

“You can’t put those here- this is private property!” The police officer on duty was clearly harassing the Not In My Name vigilers. He was referring to the posters leaning against the fence. “This is not private property- this belongs to the public- we’ve never been told this before.” “You just haven’t been here when I was,” the officer replied. “This belongs to the superintendent of the water district and he doesn’t want your signs here.” “Can you call your supervisor?” the vigiler asked. “I am the supervisor.” Perhaps my presence as a press member taking pictures made a difference. A few minutes later the officer came back, more relaxed. This time he said, “As long as the water district is fine with it and doesn’t complain, Commander Georges (sp?) is okay about it.” March 16, 2009 - 3:06 AM
“We call them the “crazies” and they call us the “terrorists”. A small group of men form across the street in support of Israeli Zionists. I went to take their pictures. One man seemed to be hiding behind a sign. “Don’t worry,” I said, “I see you don’t want your picture taken.” “No,” he said, “I’m just holding too many things.” I looked at the other posters, and took a few more pictures. Someone handed me a flier. I didn’t think there was anything confrontational about our exchange, I thought they mostly ignored me. But when I edited my images, I guess I was the cause of some attention. I read the flyer when I got home. The gist of it is, “They started the fight, we’re just defending ourselves. And God is on our side.” March 16, 2009 - 3:06 AM

Illinois House Bill 0363 sponsored by Cynthia Soto, if passed, will put a one year moratorium on school closures, turnarounds consolidations and phase-outs. This bill would be retroactive, and if passed give Carpenter legal grounds to contest the February 25th decision by the Chicago Board of Education. It is also expected that the board would not honor the bill, and make it ineffective through drawn out lawsuits done at the public’s expense. March 25, 2009 - 12:49 AM

In an open show of contempt for the picket by Carpenter, Ogden Program Coordinator and his friend smirk with a sense of arrogant entitlement. March 25, 2009 - 12:49 AM
“Independent” Hearing Officer Michael Melendez. Melendez apparently wasn’t aware that turning his summary in to CPS officials even by Monday would not be enough time for it to be included in the agenda for the Wednesday board meeting. It is highly doubtful that the board members will look at any content from the “hearing” before rubberstamping Ogden’s land grab. March 25, 2009 - 12:49 AM
Steadfast students from Carpenter filled the front row of the room. March 25, 2009 - 12:49 AM
With a salary of over $100,000 Ms. Husbands fulfilled her role by reading a script from the Office of New Schools declaring the purpose of the hearing. She again repeated erroneous information about Carpenter’s “under-utilization” which has been continually and solidly refuted. March 25, 2009 - 12:59 AM
Principal of Carpenter School was the first to present and she gave critical information that was never addressed by members of the Ogden administration, faculty or community. Munoz first explained how their building utilization was actually at 113%. She then went on to show a map that revealed the latest boundary change would disclude most Carpenter students from the new Ogden International High School. Those who testifed on Ogden’s behalf blatantly ignored this piece of information, insisting that Carpenter would benefit from the new high school. March 25, 2009 - 12:59 AM
The Assistant Principal of the proposed Ogden International High School ( I was not able to verify his name correctly before “press time”). This gentleman made a vague speech concerning the “global focus” of the new high school. He said that the high school will have a “global attitude toward learning skills... with absolutely the best progress possible.” The A.P. went on to claim that neighborhood children will be included” in this “all encompassing environment,” they will be “globally trained” and “master their language.” “We want to welcome diversity,” he patronized. March 25, 2009 - 12:59 AM
“I wish this beautiful outpouring could occurr more and more!” declared Sal Lombardo in a superficially emphatic tone. “We’re not here to push anyone out!” “I’m disappointed that this process is being sensationalized- this is not political. This is not economical.” Sal went on, “I’m in real estate. Last year I only made $17,000. I’m just like you- I’m working class!” March 25, 2009 - 12:59 AM
Mrs. Moore has a child in the 8th grade at Ogden Middle school, and while she thanks Carpenter, she feels the high school options for her child are limited if she doesn’t get into Walter Payton. Apparently the othe selective enrollment and neighborhood schools, are not good enough for her child, albeit for others. March 25, 2009 - 12:59 AM
Steven Bennett points out to us that North Side College Prep only accepts 300 students out of the 6,000 that apply. He claims that he desperately needs more high school options for his daughters Sage and Lilly who have just started at Ogden Elementary. Mr. Bennett goes on to purport that it is a false idea that Ogden is “pushing out” Carpenter. Besides, he says, if not Carpenter, it would just be another school. Mr. Bennett apparently failed to see the contradiction of his statement. March 25, 2009 - 12:59 AM
Carpenter parent Jessica Contreras responded to Ogden’s need for “more options” by pointing to the three charter schools in the area. The irony is that while the Office of New School touts charter schools as a creative solution for quality education, Chicago’s more affluent strata has rejected them as valid forms of education for their children. Most charter schools have opened on the south and west sides of the city, targeting poverty stricken communities whose neighborhood schools have been sabotaged. March 25, 2009 - 12:59 AM
Jane Fleming is a professor of early childhood education as well a a community representative of Carpenter’s Local School Council. Ms. Fleming roundly criticised the hearing for improper timing as well as for not fairly alerting the Carpenter community. While the Open Meetings Act requires public meetings to allow seven days notice, and a further seven days before any decisionmaking, this meeting allowd only three days notice and only two business days before the decision making. Such actions, she pointed out, reveal that the board doesn’t care about the substance of these meetings. She further reinforced the fact that students who live across the street from Carpenter won’t be allowed to attend Ogden due to the new boundaries drawn up by CPS. March 25, 2009 - 12:59 AM
Ogden LSC member John Bradshaw stated that there are two issues at hand: saving Carpenter and expanding Ogden. He went on to say he had sent a note to Ogden’s principal that he was in full support of expansion. He supported this statement by saying Ogden has already invested money in the building. This was followed with a vague justification statement utilizing the current buzz phrase,” these are difficult and hard times.” March 25, 2009 - 12:59 AM
Maria Hernandez laid some succinct facts that negated Ogden’s need to take over the Carpenter building. These facts were never reputed by any representative of Ogden. Mrs. Hernandez pointed to three other available buildings Ogden could pursue. The first is Near North Community High School. Already a high school with better athletic facilities than Carpenter, it is also 50% closer to Ogden Elementary. (It is surmised that this building is being saved for a new Fine Arts Charter School, a pet project of Maggie Daley.) Hernandez also pointed to the Mulligan H.S. building, which is 13 blocks from Ogden Elementary. Lastly, Lozano Elementary uses only one of its two buildings. One of those buildings is brand new. Maria Hernandez finished by pointing to clear sabotaged. “CPS took our bussing.” Ironically, Ogden is allowed to bus it’s students to the Carpenter building. March 25, 2009 - 1:04 AM
Pauline Lipman is a professor of education policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Lipman pointed to her recently released research which correlates the activities of Renaissance 2010 to the real estate market. “This is, frankly, a real estate deal,” she stated. She also pointed out the hypocrisy of Jennifer Husband’s claim that CPS supports ‘small schools’; “We have here (in Carpenter) a small school.” March 25, 2009 - 1:04 AM
Rico Gutstein, a colleague of Dr. Lippman put it succinctly, “This is a landgrab.” He went on to respond to Ogden’s claims of a “global school. “Does ‘global knowledge’ include having empathy for the kids at Carpente... if we don’t understand how other people see the world, are we really teaching a ‘global perspective?’” Gutstein also went on to discuss the apparent colonialist attitude of the Ogden community. March 25, 2009 - 1:04 AM
Stanley Kusper humbly presented himself as “president of Ogden’s Local School Council.” He started with heart felt words that “we really didn’t want to push Carpenter out” but his mood soon brightened as he extolled, “the location is great... it is a perfect location for us...” To those with a longer memory, Kusper’s appearance as a humble LSC president was somewhat amusing. Kusper was a multi-term Clerk of Cook County going back to the Democratic Machine days of the first Mayor Daley. Despite his senority, Kusper apparently retains enough vigor to meet the LSC presidency requirement of having a child enrolled at Ogden School. Check out this link: http://books.google.com/books?id=CxkAwssQTXcC&pg=PA106&lpg=PA106&dq=stanley+kusper+corruption&source=bl&ots=PDjNWijIJB&sig=O7EiVFMus-gVsOcXq7NGnx5lgCQ&hl=en&ei=qpDJSb-tJc_qnQetzeGPAw&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result March 25, 2009 - 1:11 AM
Carol Caref is a teacher at Chicago Vocational High School and member of CORE, Caucus of Rank and file Educators (CORE). After the evidence in favor of Carpenter staying open was presented, Caref became one of the voices asking Ogden to make an ethical decision. “You are being used,” she said, “You have the opportunity to tell the board, 'do not destroy Carpenter.'” March 25, 2009 - 1:11 AM
Kwame Pitts is a parent who spoke in support of Carpenter. “I had children at Irving Park Middle School, but we were pushed out to make way for Disney II... Ogden needs to say ‘no’... EVERYONE deserves a quality education...” March 25, 2009 - 1:11 AM
Holmes Elementary student Destiny also spoke in support of Carpenter. “I know how it feels,” she empathized. Holmes school was set for “turnaround” but was taken off the list at the last moment. March 25, 2009 - 1:11 AM
“I’ve been a student at Carpenter since pre-school... Ogden is pushing out us kids... all of the kids are feeling the same way... this is making a hole in our hearts,” -Alejandra. March 25, 2009 - 1:11 AM
Jackson Potter is a member of CORE and a teacher at the High School for Social Justice. Potter responded to Ogden, “It’s not true you don’t have a choice... someone does decide... it IS in your power and control... I understand your desire for a high school... I encourage you, if you are genuine, join Carpenter, go to the Board and demand another school... let’s combine our forces...” March 25, 2009 - 1:11 AM
Teacher Kristine Mayle spoke next, “this is a pattern of CPS... they target small effective schools...Ogden, this is a ‘teachable moment’... a person from Ogden said earlier, ‘people want this’, but I have to say; these people don’t want this.” Mayle is a special education teacher at DeLaCrus, which is set to close this year under Daley’s Renaissance 2010 plan. March 25, 2009 - 1:11 AM
Carpenter student Maria begain to speak but quickly broke down in tears. Still, she spoke truth to power, “You talk about no child left behind, but you’re leaving every kid behind, including my little sister...” March 25, 2009 - 1:11 AM
Maria finishes her message to the Ogden community. March 25, 2009 - 1:11 AM
Ogden special education teacher Aubrey Feeney spoke in defense of the proposed high school; “I need to look out for my kids.” March 25, 2009 - 1:23 AM
Adam Loredo is a teacher at Ogden. He claimed his status as a “third generation teacher... would never do anything to compromise his integrity... Ogden International High School is an option for all children...” March 25, 2009 - 1:23 AM
Madeline Freund introduced herself as a member of the Ogden LSC and former teacher. “...displacement is something we’re really grappling with...OIHS will enhance your schoo, your community... this is not an economic issue... step back and see there are merits...we want to be a part of your community...the decision is up to CPS...” March 25, 2009 - 1:23 AM
Laura Pahr, a Holmes teacher speaking in support of Carpenter pointed to the ramifications of “...moving children to another school against their consent is traumatic... it takes 3-6 months for adjustment... a parent earlier mentioned three other buildings; go for those options...” March 25, 2009 - 1:23 AM
Ogden Middle School Social Studies teacher Ryan Streit attempted to equalize Ogden with other city schools, “ half of our students qualify for a free lunch...we need new opportunities... I look forward to this opportunity.” Students qualify for free lunches based on their family’s income. While most city schools have a free lunch rate of 95% or above, Ogden’s (actually 25%), located in the wealthy Gold Coast, has one of the lowest in Chicago. March 25, 2009 - 1:23 AM
Holmes student Jason Hall gave more support for Carpenter,”I feel what you’re going through.” March 25, 2009 - 1:23 AM
Ogden Middle School student Gerris Pierce spoke with confusion and irony; “if we’re taken out of our main element now (to travel to a different building for high school), it won’t be good, it doesn’t make sense for us to go somewhere else...” Gerris might as well have been talking about students of Carpenter. March 25, 2009 - 1:23 AM
Ogden Middle School student Jahma Harut (sp) spoke with the same confusion and irony as her peer Gerris Pierce; “I think it is important for us to stay at the same building... the children of (of Ogden) will feel as comfortable as previously. Carpenter is the perfect location...” March 25, 2009 - 1:23 AM
Ogden student Carl continues to ignore Carpenter students as human beings, “coming to Carpenter was great for us...but if we get OIHS it would be an easier transition for us...putting OIHS into Carpenter would help the learning environment...” March 25, 2009 - 1:23 AM
“the move here was great... we have a dedicated music and art room, a science lab... (the new high school will be) right by the CTA and the highway... ideal location” Brian McCormick, Ogden Middle School teacher continues the colonialist attitude of his peers by ignoring the legitimacy of the indigenous population. March 25, 2009 - 1:33 AM
Laura Padilla, Carpenter student, “moving children around is hard on them...I don’t think Carpenter should be closed.” Overcome with sorrow, Laura also broke down in tears at the loss of her school community. March 25, 2009 - 1:33 AM
Anthony Vandarakis is the program coordinator for Ogden. He made an extended apology for his principal’s absence because of a “student field trip to France.” Vandarakis then became very excited, “...CPS is getting it’s feet wet in the K-12 arena... we’re really excited about this... can’t sleep at night...” Vandarakis continued, “I wished we were talking more about how fabulous this will be... Wells H.S. is not an option, it’s a failing high school..” Prior to the hearing, Mr. Vandarakis was outside the bulding showing his arrogant contempt for the picket Carpenter supporters had set up. March 25, 2009 - 1:33 AM
Carpenter student Lucera Bermodez spoke about having the Ogden High School in the same building as Carpenter during it’s phase out. “you shouldn’t mix up the ages, it’s not appropriate for the little kids... No Child Left Behind... why are you kicking us out?” March 25, 2009 - 1:33 AM
Nate Goldbaum, primary teacher and member of CORE, “what is the moral choice? ... with the economic crisis, building more schools should be the priority... good schools for everybody...” March 25, 2009 - 1:33 AM
Some of the on lookers weren't pleased... March 25, 2009 - 1:33 AM
Xian Barrett, also a teacher and member of CORE. “I work in a gang infested high school... I teach Japanese education..we have language education in our school too,” he spoke sarcastically. “Let’s focus our full criticism on the decision being made. ‘no choice’ is a bad lesson to the kids... there is always a choice... the two communities should join together.” Barrett finished by saying he was, “moved by the Ogden students, who want the same thing as Carpenter... empathy is important...” March 25, 2009 - 1:33 AM
Patricia Orozco was the last to speak. She was a lasting reminder as she spoke on the difficulty in getting her daughter into the same school as her son, who is hearing impaired. “I haven’t heard where our new schools will be... I can’t start over, I worked hard to get our daughter here...” March 25, 2009 - 1:33 AM

MIDWEST REGIONAL SOCIALIST CONFERENCE 2009 Capitalism isn't working. Socialism is the alternative—a world organized for human need, not profit, where resources are controlled by and for the vast majority, instead of by a tiny rich minority. Real change depends on struggle and action by our side. These regional socialist conferences are dedicated to arming a new generation of rebels, activists and organizers with arguments and ideas for a revolutionary socialist alternative, learning our history of rebellion and resistance, and discussing strategies for building organization and winning struggles for real change.
