LOCAL: WAR, BIOTECH: WMDs at UIC: University Lab Wins Record Grant To Work with Cipro-Resistant Anthrax Bioweaponry

The University of Illinois at Chicago won the largest grant in its history--to use for developing weapons of mass destruction. A team of ten UIC researchers won a $15.7 million grant to work with a strain of anthrax resistant to the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (cipro).

This research has raised serious ethical and security questions, and is moreover a violation of longstanding international law (including the 1972 International Biological Weapons Convention and the 1925 Geneva Protocol).

A public hearing was held November 19 at UIC to air concerns and protests from the university community and concerned citizens. Listen to excerpts of the meeting here.
