LOCAL: CRIMINAL (IN)JUSTICE: Cop Trial Exposes Police Violence

Retired Chicago cop Kenny "Big Nose" Lunsford testified in open court last week that it was appropriate to use deadly force even if a suspect poses no threat. That testimony came at a civil rights trial that has Lunsford and his partner on the hot seat for shooting and killing Cabrini Green resident Michael Russell in the back in 1998.

The case, which is expected to wind up later this week, also raises broader issues of purjury, cover-up and gross misconduct on the part of police brass and the State's Attorney's Office, which has refused to push forward criminal charges against Lunsford and his partner. Read more.

Update: Lunsford and the City of Chicago were found guilty to the tune of $1.5 million. Read more.
